Waiting at the top of the world

I am fairly certain that even the birds know that the grounds at Hope are special. I always see them either (like in this picture) waiting for something at the top of a tree, or calling out to another bird from deep within the woods. And in my mind, they come to Hope and wait, they come to Hope and call out, because they know that at Hope they will be found. Yesterday, I left Russell's funeral early. For the past few days, I had been fighting what I knew was a losing battle as I tried to keep my emotional pain from spilling over to my physical self. It caught up to me at the funeral. The room started spinning and I sprinted out, trying desperately to outrun it. The funeral had been at Holy Trinity and after I left, I went home, rested a bit, and then drove over to Hope. For the past six months, I have come to Hope every morning and walked, searching for God, looking for Him in the sunrise and in the rabbits and doves that live in the labyrinth. But ...

Little Brown

When I was a kid, it wasn't the darkness that told me it was late and time to stop playing and head on indoors. It was the bats. Most likely the Little Brown Bat, which, I learned yesterday, is now in danger of extinction due to a fungus that attacks bats while they are hibernating. It is amazing to me the little things (bats included) that we take for granted. They are the background noise of our lives and when they go missing, we are left wondering just what exactly has changed. Now that winter is long over (at least here in Florida) nature has exploded with life, with lizards that move through the grass like they were swimming, weaving in between the individual blades, and with insects too. Though April showers may bring May flowers, the rain would be pointless in the life cycle of a flower or tree or shrub were it not for the pollinating insects. The Kingdom of God

In my book, Bell to Bell: A Get-Through-Today Devotional for Teachers , I tell the story of the time the math teacher down the hall called me down to her room so she could show me something strange she had found. There in the back of the room, where the wall met the floor, was a small plant, surrounded by a small mound of dirt. She and I both stood there, trying to figure out where it had come from. There was no crack in the floor or the wall. Had it really found a way through a foot of cinderblock from the outside to the inside? And how was it surviving at all, lit only by fluorescent lights each day? It was a mystery—until one night when the custodian decided to sweep the plant into the trash.
