Negative Space

In art class, when I was a kid, we learned about negative space, how drawing the area around the object might give you a better interpretation of that object than drawing it directly.

I've learned to use negative space to find my hawks in the morning. If I search the trees for Navarre, I will never find him. Instead I listen for other birds. The mockingbirds, in particular, are always agitated when Navarre is nearby. But for the past few days, they've been silent.

This morning, it was blackbirds, practically howling. And when I zoomed in on them, I found Navarre, sitting patiently and quietly in a nearby branch.
