Predictable

I have read that birds are very predictable so yesterday when the hawk appeared shortly after the pileated woodpecker, I marked the time as 8:25.

It was 8:23 this morning, when I heard the hawk for the first time. I had been walking the grounds, looking for him, worrying for him and a nest that seemed somewhat smaller and perhaps even empty. Had the hawks abandoned it? Had they moved on?

But the male hawk made his call at 8:23. I found him a few minutes later as the mockingbirds once again began screeching in alarm.

The hawk seemed rather relaxed, shaking out his feathers. Here his talons are raised and yes, it seems like he is almost saying "hi," or "see my talons and run."
