I wonder sometimes if even nature knows where God is to be found.

And that's why it is so silent and so still in that space right before sunrise.

In my book, Bell to Bell: A Get-Through-Today Devotional for Teachers , I tell the story of the time the math teacher down the hall called me down to her room so she could show me something strange she had found. There in the back of the room, where the wall met the floor, was a small plant, surrounded by a small mound of dirt. She and I both stood there, trying to figure out where it had come from. Seek

There are times when I think the whole purpose of Hope Episcopal Church is to epitomize the instruction, "Seek and ye shall find." There are so many paths at Hope. There are paths to the Memorial Garden, paths to the statue of Jesus, literal winding paths like our prayer labyrinth. There are paths that honestly might require a treasure map of some sort. Want to find the bridge? Well, head out back to the tree line where you think there are absolutely no paths and get right up to the water and then take the path to your right, follow that through the two bent trees, hang a left and there is the bridge. Beyond the bridge, bring your machete. But if you take the time to seek, you will be rewarded. With These Words

If tonight you find yourself unable to sleep, lying awake in bed, watching the shadows sweep across the ceiling with each car whose headlights pass by the open window, if tomorrow you find yourself … lost, for a moment, stopped and still in the kitchen, at the mailbox, at the front door, with tears in your eyes and you can’t quite say why, if you find your heart racing, this morning, if you find your hands trembling, my prayer for you is this: That the Lord would take your hand in His, that He would put His hand over your heart, that He would wipe away all your tears, that He would quiet your restless mind in the times when you feel most alone and abandoned, that He would still your quivering spirit with these words, whispered to and imprinted on your very soul.
