Another Look

Photogenic,
the male cardinal
sits with scarlet feathers
and preens and leans
almost right into the lens.

But the female
cardinal possesses an
almost unnoticed charm,
a grace that says
she has seen things
and known things
that others have not.

She ages faster
and her wings present
the faintest red.
It is as if she's been painted
with an antique stain
that claims her for another age.
