Walking with Turtles

I took a walk,
this morning, with a turtle
out behind the church.

He moved slow and deliberate
through the grass, hunkering low,
his body like a WW I doughboy’s helmet.

And he was on a mission.
He knew exactly where he was headed,
to the still green pond and a morning swim.

I thought I might be intruding,
when he paused every now and then,
but then, I realized, he was simply
waiting for me to catch up.
