Man Created Narcissus, Not God

Do not assume
that heron is simply
staring at his own
perfect reflection,
pitched clear
in the still waters.

The heron
is no Narcissus.
If he was,
he would get lost
and drunk, drinking
in his own reflection.

He would never eat,
oblivious to the fish
tickling his toes.

Out of all
God’s creations,
the birds must be
the least captivated
by their own beauty.

No time
to fall for
themselves
when they are busy
plucking seedpod,
turtle, fish and frog
from the buffet,
sitting in the shallows.
