Attention

You would think that the easiest bird to find would be the woodpecker.  Easy to locate by its red crown or the jack hammering noise of its bill on wood.

Strangely enough, it was neither of those two things that led me to the pileated woodpecker this morning.  The first thing I heard was what sounded like the shredding of bark.  I followed that noise and then saw whole chunks of bark flying through the air.  Only then did I see the woodpecker who, due to its large size, is able to rip the bark off trees in order to get its food.

It is the most difficult bird to photograph.  It never stops moving.  Its always a good distance away.  There are always a dozen things between me in the camera that the camera would rather focus on.  But I do my best, because it's worth it.
